Greek main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras delivered his main speech in Omonoia Square, downtown Athens, ahead of the upcoming January 25 general elections. Addressing an audience of thousands of SYRIZA supporters, Tsipras appeared confident that his party will be victorious after the polls close on Sunday, while he requested a self-reliance mandate from Greek voters in order to form a strong government. In addition, the main opposition leader directly attacked Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his policies.

Tsipras opened his speech by saying that Greece will not only have a SYRIZA victory on Sunday, but a historic triumph of the people “who will defeat fear and pain. Who will punish its terrified terrorists.” Furthermore, Tsipras referred to a page break and a change of an era.

“No matter what you were voting until yesterday; [We proceed] all together, to roll up the sun again over Greece. The sun of justice, the sun of democracy, the sun of dignity. All together, because poverty does not discriminate. Unemployment does not discriminate. Despair does not discriminate. ‘Padlocks’ do not discriminate. All together, because united people cannot be defeated.”

The European Union’s institutions are holding a series of vigils this morning to honour those killed in yesterday’s terrorist attack on the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Carrying placards reading “Je suis Charlie” dozens of people paid a tribute to the victims of the satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo”, a days after the massacre that left 12 people dead and 10 injured. The solidarity meeting took place outside the French Institute in downtown Athens.

Εκατοντάδες μαθητές έχουν συγκεντρωθεί στα Προπύλαια με τις πορείες για την έκτη επέτειο του θανάτου του Αλέξη Γρηγορόπουλου, στις 6 Δεκεμβρίου του 2008, να έχουν ξεκινήσει.

Οι μαθητές κρατούν πανό που αναφέρονται στο δικαίωμα στην μόρφωση. Αυτή την ώρα έχει κλείσει η οδός Πανεπιστημίου, ενώ δυνάμεις της αστυνομίας είχαν "μπλοκάρει" αρχικά και την Βουκουρεστίου.

Τελικά η πορεία ξεκίνησε περίπου στις 14:15, με τους διαδηλωτές να κατεβαίνουν την Πανεπιστημίου, με πορεία προς την Πεσματζόγλου και στη συνέχεια την οδό Σταδίου.

Το απογευμα η πορεια αρχεισε στις 6,¨κατά τη διάρκεια της πορείας στο κέντρο της Αθήνας, κουκουλοφόροι προκάλεσαν ζημιές σε καταστήματα, ενώ έβαλαν φωτιές σε κάδους απορριμμάτων.

Ασφυκτική ήταν για πολλές ώρες η ατμόσφαιρα στο κέντρο από βόμβες μολότοφ και χειροβομβίδες κρότου-λάμψης που εκτοξεύονταν από κουκουλοφόρους και αστυνομικούς αντίστοιχα.

Τη νύχτα οι συμπλοκές περιορίστηκαν στα Εξάρχεια και στις οδούς Στουρνάρη και Τοσίτσα.

yesterday was the sixth anniversary of the killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman, that triggered the most violent riots Athens has seen in recent years.

It was a little before 9:00 on the evening of December 6, 2008, when Grigoropoulos and his friends were sitting in a corner at Exarcheia and exchanged swear words with two policemen in a patrol car that was passing by.

A little later, the two policemen, Epaminondas Korkoneas and Vasilis Saraliotis returned to the scene on foot. The former, pulled out his gun and shot Grigoropoulos. The young man died a few minutes later in his friend’s lap. His friend was Nikos Romanos.

The two policemen returned to the Exarcheia police station and reported that they had been attacked by anarchists. They didn’t report the shooting.

Ένταση και επεισόδια σημειώθηκαν μετά τη λήξη της πορείας αλληλεγγύης για τον απεργό πείνας Νίκο Ρωμανό στο κέντρο της Αθήνας.
Η συγκέντρωση ξεκίνησε από το Μοναστηράκι, κατευθύνθηκε προς την πλατεία Κοτζιά και κατόπιν στο Σύνταγμα, όπου είναι συγκεντρωμένοι οι Σύροι πρόσφυγες. Στη συνέχεια ο όγκος των διαδηλωτών κατευθύνθηκε στα Προπύλαια
Μετά το τέλος της συγκέντρωσης, ομάδες νεαρών κινήθηκαν στα στενά των Εξαρχείων και προκάλεσαν φθορές σε παρκαρισμένα αυτοκίνητα, ενώ παράλληλα έκαψαν κάδους απορριμμάτων, στήνοντας οδοφράγματα.

ATHENS, Greece — Anarchists have burnt a public transport bus and several cars in central Athens during clashes with police.

The violence followed a large demonstration Tuesday in support of a jailed anarchist who is on hunger strike seeking prison leave to attend university.

Riot police fired tear gas to dispel stone-throwing rioters, but no arrests or injuries have been reported.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 people earlier marched through central Athens in solidarity with Nikos Romanos, a young anarchist convicted of involvement in an armed bank robbery.
